Our honey is collected one frame at a time from hives located around Winston-Salem, NC. The process begins in the late winter when each hive's queen begins growing her colony by laying thousands of eggs a day in order to build a workforce of bees.
Those worker bees will maintain the hive and bring in gallons of nectar drop by drop from blooming flowers and trees. This nectar is converted to honey by the bees through a process of adding enzymes and lowering the water content of the liquid stored inside the hive. Then worker bees seal each honey-filled cell with a wax cap.
When our beekeepers collect these honey frames, we remove the wax cappings and spin the frames in a centrifuge. Next, we filter the extracted honey multiple times to achieve clarity and to remove any clumps of pollen and wax before bottling.
It's a labor intensive process for the bees and the beekeepers, but the end result is delicious! Serendipity Bee Co. Honey is sold through this site and at the Salem College Mercantile, the Kaleideum Gift Shop, and will be available other locations soon.
